this tank is awesome

This tank is very well made and is extremely easy to use. First time I used it, I emptied the gray tank just in case of a mess. I managed to spill about a pint when I unhooked the hose from the gray tank. Like anything, practice makes perfect and I haven't had a spill since. I don't worry anymore about not having a full hook up site.

18 gallon tote upgraded to the larger 35 gallon tote

We ordered the 18 gal tote. It was very well made and looked easy to use. After received, My wife and I decided the 35 gallon tote should have been purchased since we have the 30 gallon tanks in our RV. We took it back to Camper World for exchange in Akron. They were very nice about exchanging it, gave me the sale price, and even the 10% discount that had expired a few days earlier. We were very happy with their response. Can't wait for the upcoming camping season!

Bought this tote for my truck camper. The camper has 30 gal tanks so i'll need to make two trips but the physical dimensions were right. It rolls really well and is light enough when full to hand tote if needed. Only real issues are the unit does't come with all the fittings. I had to make a jumper to attach it to the sewer fitting using another hose and a screw on connector. The local dealer didn't have the proper fitting that I would have bought at CW had I known. It really should come with all the parts. Issue number two is about a half gallon is left in the tote. Not ideal but better than raising the jacks and driving the camper to the dump.

We started going to state campgrounds that do not have full hookup but have a dump station. This made extended stays much easier. Well made product, all self contained.

Good Product

Easy to use, and easy to pull to the dump station. The only issue I have with it is that when the shutoff valve closes to prevent overflow, there is too much left in the pipe on my trailer to fit in the tote. An adjustable shut off valve would be a nice feature.

Good at what it is for

Bought the 18 gallon version about 3 months ago at the CW store on sale. Didn't realize the online price was MUCH cheaper than in the store. As far as the product is concerned, I like the tank and since we are at state parks often that have no sewer it helps a lot. It does a good job of filling and then stopping but beware, have some kitchen gloves or whatever because you may have a mess at the outlet. That 6 of pipe from the outlet into the valve cutoff holds some, well crap. I would not recommend the version with the wheel and handle. As a matter of fact I took the handle off. I have a simple rack on my bike that I bungie it to the bike and peddle it over to the drain. The little water hose is a nice trick, but I have yet to find a water outlet within 12 of the drain. Some have hose but you cannot connect that to it. The front wheel is also a pain when dumping, most stations are sloped but you want some distance between the tank and the hose outlet but the wheel keeps rolling back to the drain. Kind of a pain. Also be sure to buy the adapter to go from male to male sewer fittings so you can attach your elbow section to the end. Otherwise your gonna make a mess, I know. Overall I should have bought the cheaper one as I have already realize the features of the best one are not for me. Yes the tank is heavy on the bike and I have folding bikes but they do just fine. Hope that helps.

Gray water transport

Used this in National Parks with no hook-ups (Yosemite, Zion) to dump gray water from shower. Was small and light enough to pull to dump station by hand. Very difficult to empty completely. Would also recommend a 90° elbow accessory for hose end, which will require a double-sided adapter ring.

Thetford Smarttote 18-gallon

This product worked as advertised. It was easy to operate and empties readily at the dump station. Only issue for me was that I have to haul from a remote site to the State Park station which involves loading in a truck and the weight is difficult even with a ramp to load/unload. Larger wheels would probably make it easier to transport except in a park as it was probably designed for, I know. Very heavy duty and easy to use, well worth the money to use as the honey bucket.

I had the opportunity to use this last weekend for the first time. The instructions were very easy to follow. The tank, hose and overflow prention all worked perfectly. The only thing that would make it easier is if the hose were even another foot longer. Very satisfied with the purchase.

This product worked very well. It made a dirty job not so bad at all. When I realized we were not going to have septic hook up at the camp site, I ordered the smart tote and had it delivered to he location. Perfect timing camping world . No mess at all. very durable construction. Hooks up nicely to the ball hitch on the truck. Easy to use.

I don't have access to an easy holding tank dump so used this smart tote. I was worried about it overfilling and making a mess but that didn't happen. I have a clean out in front and back of my home so was quite handy. I have used it twice and am very happy. It is easier than fighting the traffic at the service station dump.

I didn't want to spend this much money on a portable waste tank, and contemplated buying the less expensive one, but I'm so glad I didn't. This one works perfectly and is designed to not be messy, which it isn't. Easy to pull by hand. Definetely recommend.

this portable tank saves you the hastle of moving your trailer from your camp to the dump station every time you have to empty your tanks. Not really messy, just watch for the red bebble when it comes up, that means its time to empty. I just wish the hose it comes with was a little longer so you or the tank dont have to be right over the drain hole of the dump station. overall its pretty good.

Full hose, now what?

Great idea, it does work. The problem is knowing when to shut the dump valve from the RV. I have the 18 gal. tank, it has an red popup indicator that's suppose to tell you when to shut the RV's dump valve. After it pops up, you close the dump valve, then push the red full indicator button down. This is suppose to suck the fluid already in the hose into the tank. Doesn't work. Why they don't just have a clear, see through area on the portable dump tank, so you can tell when it's getting full is beyond me. That's my only complaint, what to do with a full hose and a full tank?

Weak Front Wheels

9 out of 9 people found this review helpful.
October 12, 2009
I had the 18 gallon model. I liked some of the features, but it was difficult to completely empty the contents. The real problem was the way the front wheels were mounted to the body. While towing the tank, the front wheels hit a rough place in the driveway and broke off from the bottom of the tank, spilling the contents. What a mess! The mounting point for the front wheels needs to be stronger on the high capacity models.

After reading the reviews on all the different size units and being able to see all displayed at CW Knoxville, decided on the 18 gal unit. All units same construction and I feel that weight when full causes the problems mentioned. Have used for gray water only 5 trips 1/4 mile to dump w/no problem, needed to buy mentioned adapter. So far no problems and a couple of extra trips (30 min) to keep from moving camper well worth it. A + that it fits on the ladder bike/chair rack for travel. Beats pulling 5th wheel to dump every 4/5 days.

This was very easy to use with no mess. Much easier than packing up the camper and taking it to a dump station.
