We installed ours under the over head cabinet, on the outside though. We use it to store our cards, dice games, paper and pens. It is perfect for this. No more searching around for these items, they are all in one place, my husband installed it in the corner above the table.
When we are on the road, we just pull the drawer out and secure it in the cabinet so it does not spill out.

how does it lock
If facing foreward, it might slide open when stopping. what mechanism is there to prevent accidental opening even in a hard stop?
Self-locking sliding channels are to keep the drawer from opening due to inertia as you have described.

The measurements say this is 11 7/8 wide. Is the actual drawer width, or the width including the handles and hanger?
The railing adds 1/2" to each side.

Does this drawer lock in the closed position?
I read in one of the reviews that they remove the drawer and store it while traveling.
These are designed to snap into the closed position and should not come open during travel.
