    The sides are 4" tall. Because the thickness of plates may vary, there is no listing of maximum number of plates they will hold.

    Technically yes, these will hold square plates, however, they are meant for round plates. I am no mathematician, but the smaller size should hold a square plate that is 5" where the larger size should hold a 7.25" plate. The larger size would be snug, and the corners may stick out of the holes.
