Class III and IV refers to capability of the hitch receiver. One of the primary characteristics is a 2" square receiver tube. Class I and II models have a 1-1/4" square. Second characteristic between the different classes is the maximum towing capacity. Curt Manufacturing's 'Understanding Towing' article is helpful for reference information.

This cargo carrier is universal in vehicle application, the only requirement is a class III or IV receiver hitch with 2" square needs to be mounted to the vehicle.
