Trailer Hitch & Tow
There’s one seemingly small but vitally important element to every travel trailer, tow-behind, and fifth wheel, and that’s a hitch. A tow vehicle has to have a hitch of some kind in order to bring an RV out into the woods, and not all hitches are created equal. While some vehicles come from the factory stock with a trailer hit, many others don’t and require the addition of one. Many hitch mounts today offer interchangeable ball sizes to allow for diverse towing—from an RV to a boat to a small piece of construction equipment. For fifth wheels, trucks require a special “gooseneck” hitch or slide hitch. These may come from the factory on a lot of heavy-duty trucks, especially those made for farms, but they can be installed on some other trucks as well. Of course, not all hitches are meant just for the tow vehicle—they can fit on the back of a trailer or coach as well. This is handy for hauling along other types of outdoor toys, whether it’s a boat, a couple of motorcycles, or a trailer that fits anything from an ATV to a load of kayaks. No matter what, the right hitch is vital to making a camping experience a good one.
