Need to pre-warn customers as to the need to disconnect the gas line and loosen the burner assembly so as to make room to install

This will use approximately 440 watts, 110 volts at 4 amps.

8ft cord not going to work for me....can I use an extension cord
I don't intend to go against the manufacturer, but 4 amps (440 watts) isn't anything to worry about in regards to an extension cord. Just make sure it is at least 16 gauge with ground heavy duty extension cord. Do not use a flimsy extension cord that you might use for a table lamp.

The manufacturer states "not to use an extension cordset" and "if no receptacle is available adjacent to the water heater to contact a qualified electrician to one properly installed".
