Rated 5 out of 5 by from This tent design knocks it out of the park. Soooo... I've recently rediscovered the joys of car camping, after a long stint of all backcountry trips, and it seemed silly to continue to use our little backcountry tents for car camping, so we decided to buy yet another tent. I looked around for a long time and this was the only tent that met most of my criteria: - I wanted it to be a four person size. Certain National Parks, like Yellowstone, have a "small" and a "large" tent camp site designation in spots, and the small campsites need all the walls to be under 96" (8ft) long. Our last site had a raised tent platform that was this size, and no larger tent would have fit there. I want to be able to show up and know that my tent won't be too big for whatever possible available site. Check. - I didn't want a full coverage rain fly. I wanted a rain fly that covered the roof and was over hung, with windows that zipped open and closed. Because I sometimes like ventilation in a hot and humid rain shower! And I like to look outside in various directions! And it's a *car camping tent*! Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, I don't want to choose between risking going outside in the middle of the night to put on a rain fly or compromising ventilation. This tent has that figured out. Raining? Stay in your sleeping bag and simply zip up the window from inside. Check. - I wanted a porch. Other tents do have zip up windows, but they don't have porches. I wanted to be able to do things outside the tent, like sit in a chair and read, and more importantly, I wanted there to be enough room for two mountain bikes. And I wanted that porch to be totally optional, in case I was in a smaller site. Check. - I wanted a dome shape, not some accordion that is gonna fail if the ground is less than ideal to stake it out perfectly. And I wanted easy set up. Check and check. Seriously easy set up. By yourself would be no problem. - I wanted to be able to stand up in it. I had to compromise here. I am 5'7" and can stand up in it ok if I use my slouchy posture. My husband is 6' and has to bend his head. Still, you can stand enough to change clothes in it, which is really mostly what you want so I'll live with a slightly less height than I had hoped for. What else? Lots of ventilation and a big door is super nice. 2 doors was an absolute must and this has that (honestly, more for truly better ventilation under extremely hot conditions than entry and exit even) Build quality is very nice and the weight is surprisingly good for a 4p, though as packaged is over the advertised weight, but it's a car camping tent so who cares? (Not planning to take it very far, but it's an unexpected bonus to know its not an absolute anchor). It's also surprisingly close to advertised dimensions, which many tents are not. 96" is more like 94" but that's pretty good in the grand scheme of things. Included footprint is also a very nice touch. So yeah, first impressions are super good. Havent had a chance to check its performance in the rain quite yet, but good reviews in rain sold me on this tent, so hopefully it lives up to them. The reason for this ridiculously long review is that not enough car camping tents are being built this way, and it's super refreshing to see one that is so thoughtful. I like thoughtful gear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Design, Ventilation, Materials, Easy Setup This tent is truly exceptional. It is perfect for my camping trips to the FL Everglades. I wanted a tent that does not require unzipping both a vestibule and the tent to get in. This is for convenience and to get less mosquitos inside with one quick motion! The great thing is...this tent gives you the best of both worlds. You have a vestibule on one side but you can enter from the door in the back directly. You DO have to attach the removable vestibule to get rain protection. The other two windows and 2nd door have rain protection flaps on the inside. One improvement I would recommend is putting an interior flap on the big door so you could use the rain fly without the vestibule, but I can tell from the design that this would be difficult to do. Because the vestibule is removable you can use the rain fly and floor saver as a beach sun shelter if you want. This really is a bad-A feature. Double utility! You can see pictures of this on Marmot's Colfax 3P listing. They don't have pics here on the 4P for some reason. I am 6'2" and I can stand up in the middle of the tent if I bow my head completely down. Fine for changing clothes. I did want a tent I could stand all the way up in, but after doing my research this really doesn't start to become possible until you go up to a 6P tent (incidentally I spoke to Marmot and they have no intentions of producing a 6P, at least not now). The head clearance is truly awesome for a 4P, the best I could find anywhere. Ventilation is also incredible. As you can see from the pics, there are huge mesh windows and doors on all four sides of the tent. For camping in conditions that get warm like the Glades, this is a phenomenal design. Setup is easy; it took me 15 minutes to set up on the first try by myself, and this was inside my house in close quarters. It will take about 10 minutes alone once you know how to do it. It's really nice to have only two poles and all clips; no sleeves to wrestle with or tear. Finally, the colors are WAY, WAY better than the website would leave you to believe. It shows the rain fly as orange, but it's really a very classy gold contrasted with a deep hunter green. I don't buy on color so I was pleasantly surprised at the color scheme. Really, really nice. The Colfax 4P is a roomy, easy to set up, high quality, sexy, breezy tent that is full of features including the ability to use the included floor saver and rain fly to build a beach sun shelter. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Did not like vestibule door design. The only way to seal the door for rain or privacy is to attach the included door vestibule which adds an additional 3 ft. to the length of the tent. I saw the product photos which showed the angled vestibule sticking out from the tent, but I assumed it was an optional feature that you didn’t have to use. I didn’t realize it was the only way to cover the door. One of the main reasons I was buying this tent was because I wanted something slightly smaller than my old cabin style tent. Well, with that vestibule sticking out an extra 3 ft., it was just as long as my old tent. This would have been a nice tent if it had a conventional door cover. The tent was light weight, fairly easy to assemble and I liked the screen all the way around, but that door just ruins the whole thing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Spacious and well made - no accessories Used on a 4 day trip to the BWCA and this tent performed very well. It's just a little on the bulky side to pack in, but it will work well for car camping. There was more than enough room for 2 of and it held up well in the rain - no leaks. My only complaint is the rainfly is the only means of privacy for the front, but really a non-issue in the backcountry. Also the accessories for this tent like the porch don't seem to be available anywhere anymore. Overall great tent.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent summer tent, not the same Marmot quality All the materials just feel cheaper to me than my 2p Swallow tent from a decade ago. Stuff sack for poles was tearing right out of the box. I guess you get what you pay for. It's a decent tent but man are you going to be cold at night if it's not warm out. Not having zip up panels over the mesh in the front is a fatal flaw. Not having two 2 way zippers on the front rain fly is really inconvenient.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for car camping I got this about a year ago so that we would have something larger than our backpacking tents. It’s great for two people and a dog. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
