Rated 4 out of 5 by from Innovative personal water filter This innovative and super compact water filter design caught my attention right away. I trust MSR to stand behind their products and so gave the TrailShot a try without hesitation. I was impressed by how efficient this small filter is! I filled a 1 liter Nalgene with 50 pumps in under a minute. I would not expect to rely on the TrailShot for large group excursions but this is a fantastic personal, minimalist tool. It was useful especially in the alpine where water sources become less abundant and larger devices more difficult to manage. Granted, I've only used this product for one solo mission and am hoping it continues to provide reliable filtration for the future!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great Idea, Poorly Implemented I was thoroughly excited about the design of this purifier. It covers the core requirements with compactness and ease of use. However, though a great idea, it was poorly implemented. The reservoir where the squeezing occurs is not attached to the filter. The problem is, as pressure builds up in the reservoir, the filter works its way out. This results in dirty water being sprayed from the gap. On top of this, the nozzle is a separate piece. Mine came off while pumping and floated down stream never to be seen again. This was only the second time this purifier was used.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great concept. More work is required to make it worthwhile We got the Trailshot as part of the Trailbase. We had been looking for a small, light weight pump to add to our sawyer gravity kit to be able to use small water flows that were difficult to dip or fill the squeeze bag from. This product was the perfect solution. As a gravity filter it works well although much slower than the Sawyer. As a small, light convenient pumped filter it worked wonderfully. At least for the first few trips. After several multiday trips the pumping efficiency has dropped considerably. A call to the MSR ""tech""sperts resulted in the tech looking up the owners manual and reading it to me despite my protest that I had already followed the manual. The check valve holds per the MSR testing procedure.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Does not work: do not buy Loved the size of this, but it is built for a man's hand and does not work for a woman's hand size. After three backpacking trips, it stopped working. Thank God my friend had a filter or I would've died of dehydration. SOOO disappointed. Tried cleaning it, backfiltering, etc. The video says to buy a new filter if this doesn't work; I'd say buy a new brand and model of a water filter! What a shame. Had high hopes. Should've read the other reviews before buying. You get what you pay for. I trusted MSR for their stoves and other equipment.... not for the water filter.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not As Advertised After using this product 4 or 5 times I finally have to accept defeat. Having used several MSR products over the years you develop confidence in their products but unfortunately the TrailShot misses the mark. I kept wanting to like this product but it never measured up to the expectations you expect from an industry leader like MSR. Taking 15 minutes to fill a 2 litre hydration bladder definitely does not meet the claims of being designed for fast pace adventures. I will continue to purchase MSR products but I can not recommend the TrailShot Water Filter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Suggestions I bought this cuz it's light and compact. On my third time using it, the body kept popping off the red filter sleeve, causing water to squirt out when pumping...with nothing making it through the filter. Fortunately I had a small zap strap to secure the body to the inner filter and got it working. I suggest MSR consider such a design improvement. Also, I wish it came with a bag. Once out of the package, it's apt to get damaged or dirty kicking around in my pack. A small stash bag would be an awesome feature. Other than that, good value for money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New go-to Filter! I've been using my MSR TrailShot for about a month now. I own many different filters (from sawyer, MSR, aquamira, etc). This has become my go-to filter for day hikes and short multi-day hikes. I was skeptical about the filters ability to pump water when I first saw it but it honestly works great! I absolutely recommend this filter, especially over the sawyer mini or squeeze filters. I've used the sawyer mini for several years and having the ability to pump the water and easier cleaning with the MSR TrailShot is worth the extra weight and price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent especially when water source is low This filter works great when you just have a small puddle of water to get water from and it's quick, plus that you don't have to wait you can drink immediately. I will admit your hand gets a little tired of squeezing but that doesn't compare to the ease of getting water from practically any puddle and filling up a bottle quickly I'm getting back on the trail. There were times when other people couldn't get the water scooped or had to wait for water to drip into their bottle while I just use the tiny pool of water and got water immediately.
